How to fix compacted soil in your lawn
If your lawn is thin, drought-stressed, and full of weeds despite regular watering and fertilizing, the problem is probably underground. Compacted soil prevents roots from growing deep, blocks water infiltration, and suffocates the microorganisms that keep soil healthy.
How to tell if your soil is compacted
Push a screwdriver into your lawn. If it takes real effort to push it 6 inches deep, your soil is compacted. You can also check for standing water after rain — compacted soil does not drain well. New construction homes are almost always compacted from heavy equipment.
Core aeration — the primary fix
Core aeration pulls 2-3 inch plugs of soil out of the ground, creating channels for air, water, and roots. Do it in early September for cool-season grasses. Two passes in different directions. Leave the plugs on the surface — they break down in 1-2 weeks.
Topdressing with compost
After aerating, spread a quarter inch of compost over the lawn. It fills the aeration holes and introduces organic matter into the soil profile. This is the single best thing you can do for clay soil. Repeat annually for 2-3 years and you will see a dramatic improvement in soil structure.
Gypsum for clay soil
If your soil is heavy clay (common in Northern Virginia), gypsum helps break up the clay particles without changing soil pH. Apply at 40 pounds per 1,000 square feet. It works slowly — results appear over months, not days. Gypsum is not a substitute for aeration but works well alongside it.
Long-term strategy
Compaction is not a one-time fix. Aerate annually, topdress with compost, mulch your clippings instead of bagging, and avoid walking on wet soil. Over 2-3 years, your soil structure will improve dramatically and your lawn will show it.
