Watering new grass seed: the exact schedule for maximum germination
Watering is the number one reason overseeding fails. Too much and you wash the seed away or cause fungus. Too little and the seed dries out and dies. Here is the exact schedule that works.
Days 1-14: keep it moist
Water twice daily — early morning (6-7 AM) and late afternoon (4-5 PM). Each session should be light: about 10-15 minutes per zone. The goal is to keep the top half inch of soil consistently damp, not soaked. If the soil surface looks dry at midday, add a brief 5-minute watering.
Days 15-21: transition period
You should see tiny grass seedlings emerging. Reduce to once daily watering in the morning, slightly longer per session (15-20 minutes). The roots are starting to grow deeper so you want to encourage them downward.
Days 22-30: establish deep roots
Switch to every other day watering, 20-30 minutes per zone. The grass should be about 2 inches tall now. You are training the roots to grow deep by making them search for water rather than keeping it at the surface.
After 30 days: normal schedule
Return to a standard watering schedule: 1 inch of water per week in one or two deep sessions. Your new grass is now established enough to handle normal lawn care including mowing.
Common mistakes
Watering too heavily in the first week creates puddles that wash seed into clumps. Watering at night promotes fungal disease. Skipping even one day in the first two weeks can kill entire patches of germinating seed. Set timers or reminders — consistency is everything.
